color palette: moody luxe inspired by alexander mcQueen

In just a few days I’ll be in New York! Of course I’m looking forward to all the trade shows and seeing a ton of great designs (and designers); but I admit that I’m most looking forward to a visit to the Met with a dear friend to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit

vera wang & david's bridal

Brides on a budget everywhere, rejoice. Vera Wang has just launched a stunning collection of gowns with David’s Bridal. How romantic is that blush pink gown? Bravo, Vera and David!

inspired by: christian dior spring 2011 couture

I’m feeling inspired by these ethereal looks by John Galliano for Christian Dior (from the Spring 2011 couture runway show). I love the pretty forties vibe, and think these gowns would make amazing wedding dresses. I can totally see the third one (far right) at a fancy, formal winter wedding in Aspen — perhaps with some leather boots (for the outdoor ceremony, and a sexy pair of nude sandals for the reception), a bouquet of lily-of-the valley, and an uber-handsome royal groom (tall, dark, handsome, foreign). I see a horse drawn sled ride to the ceremony, and lots and lots of champagne cocktails.

style file: sexy valentine's day outfit

Sexy Valentine’s Day outfit: {1} Sleeveless white blouse with ruffles from Ann Taylor  {2} Pretty pink and nude lace panties from Nordstrom  {3} Diamond heart necklace from Robbins Brothers  {4} Super sexy pink suede high heels by YSL from Nordstrom  {5} Plain and simple, well fitting blue jeans from Levis  {6} Classic pale pink nail polish by Scotch.

I don’t recall ever going out on a date on Valentine’s Day. But if I did, I’d wear an understated, simple and sexy outfit like this. Okay, so the shoes aren’t so understated, but they are classic, right? I reallllly want them. I think the simplest outfit, like classic Levis, a pretty white shirt (with some ruffles for Valentine’s Day) and a great pear of heels, is the sexiest.

Normally I’m totally against any cheesy heart jewelry, but I make the exception for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Tip for the guys: keep it as understated as possible when it comes to heart jewelry. I like the look of a simple diamond heart necklace.

We will stay home for Valentine’s Day. Boring, I know. I’ll probably make some cookies or cupcakes with our son — he loves pink frosting. What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?

blog love: creature comforts

Have you seen Ez’s new column on Creature Comforts, “How Do I Wear…”? I have a sequins top hanging patiently in my closet, but was completely stumped for new ideas on how to wear it. Inspired by her “chic for cheap” column, I emailed Ez for suggestions and voila, a new column was born. Many thanks to Ez for giving me two new outfit ideas! I’ll be wearing one of them this weekend at my first holiday party of the season.

Oh, and if you haven’t already visited, check out her fabulous new magazine, Gifted, for lots of great gift (and packaging) ideas. I promise it will help you finish up your holiday shopping in no time.

intern post: autumn favorites

GUEST POST by Delphine intern, Jessica Nicholson

As a person born on the first day of Autumn, I have always been a fan of this particular time of year. Despite the lack of “traditional” seasons here in southern California, one can never miss the sure signs that fall has arrived. As much as I enjoyed prancing around in my summer dresses for the last several months, there is something so comforting about cardigans, scarves and boots. The cooler weather (and spouts of rain) have left me wanting to curl up on the couch with a book and a cup of cocoa. (Sadly, the demands of this semester’s schoolwork mixed with real life doesn’t allow much time for those sorts of luxurious afternoons.) But even the busiest people can take advantage of the feeling of the season... just pull on your cute new sweater, grab a pumpkin spice latte, and notice the colorful leaves as you make your way to today’s destination.

Check out these autumny sweaters from Urban Outfitters. The Grandpa sweaters are my new favorite thing.
Shown: Grandpa cardigan, V-back Tunic, Wool Poncho.

I can’t help it. Starbucks has delicious fun drinks for every season, and their designs are awesome! I buy their gift cards just because they are so cute.

stripes (yes, again)

So you may have noticed I have a thing for stripes. I'm seeing them everywhere lately. Usually they just show up in "Resort" collections, but this year they are lasting into winter. These four are some of my favorites: Top left: Stripe long sleeve shirt from Chance; top right: stripe wool sweater from Target; bottom right: stripe cardigan from Aerie;  bottom left: stripe hoodie from J. Crew

snow and graham and garnet hill partner

I was thrilled to see that fellow stationers Snow and Graham have branched out beyond paper and have partnered with Garnet Hill. Love that Zinnia cardigan! Check out their collection of clothes, bedding and other goodies at Garnet Hill. Congrats, Snow & Graham and Garnet Hill, on a wonderful new partnership!

wish list: fall uniform

When I was in high school I HATED having to wear my uniform. But now, the idea doesn't seem so bad. If I had a fall uniform, I think it would look something like this:

Jeggings (! did you even know that's a word? I just learned it) from AllSaints; comfy-chic lace and zip boots by 9West; perfect white shirt by Marc by Marc Jacobs; and an effortless charcoal scarf by Gucci.

Add in some cool Ray Ban shades, a classic Baum & Mercier watch, and a nice Chloé bag and I'd be ready for anything. A girl can dream, right?

romantic gowns by Monique Lhuillier

These lovely dresses are all from Monique Lhuillier's Spring 2011 collection. Wouldn't they be perfect for a romantic garden wedding? I just love the muted color palette. Ladies, don't be afraid of a little print. Too much and it becomes sort of matchy matchy tea cozy feeling, but a bit here and there is lovely. Lhuillier even showed a wedding gown with a floral print like the short bm dress above. You can see the gowns that Lhuillier sent down the catwalk at fashion week here.

tv love: austin and santino

Last night while the rest of the world was watching NFL football, I was catching up on work with the tv on in the background. Which led me to discover Project Runway alumns Austin and Santino's show on Lifetime. Have you seen it? It's fabulous! Full of inspiration and touching moments and silliness. It's truly fun to watch. And good news: you can watch full episodes on! I really love episode 5, when they make a gorgeous wedding gown with a detachable train. I plan to go back and watch again while I don't have a pile of work calling my name (hoping that happens some day).

By the way, check out the ampersand in the show logo. Clever, huh?

color i love: electric blue

J'adore the electric blue color that Gwyneth Paltrow is wearing on the cover of the latest Vogue (August 2010). Personally, I think electric blue is the only great thing about the "new wave" revival. How does she manage to always always look oh so chic: polished but not stuffy; on trend but not, you know, trendy; classic and fashion forward at the same time?!?!! Also, I'm in love with her kitchen:

sweet summer soirée: a lobster bake outfit

While I have never been to a lobster bake (I'm more of an oyster roast girl myself ... think flip flops, jean shorts and cold beers), my alter-ego would simply love a fancy beach party involving shellfish, white wine spritzers, and a kitchy outfit like this.

shown above: 1. lobster dress from anthropologie  | 2. rattan purse by tory burch  | 3. red sunglasses by kate spade  | 4. hand knotted rope bracelets  from knotworks | 5. black espadrilles with shells by nanette lepore

nautical stripes for spring

Every March the nautical stripes come out. I think it's part of the "resort" or "cruise" collections at all the stores. You can count on it, just like every September plaid will make an appearance. I'm comforted by these classics! Stripes really put me in the mood for spring.

details: 1: set sail trousers (anthropologie) ::: 2: Nautical personal stationery and calling cards (delphine) ::: 3: nautical tote (l.l. bean) ::: 4: low heeled espadrille slides (old navy) ::: 5: pin tuck white shirt (loft) ::: 6: anchor charms (cardsandcraft, etsy) ::: 7: rope necklace (brooklynrehab, etsy) ::: 8: nautical striped scarf (h&m) ::: 9: vintage brass anchor locket (thebumblingbird, etsy)

I'll admit that I have more than a couple stripey tees in my closet, including this new one by Jean Paul Gaultier for Target:

Because one entire side of the shirt is open, I also bought a box of safety pins. I plan to wear a white tank underneath, and also "sew" it up with different sized safety pins. It's going to be my beach & pool coverup this summer.

branding the usa

Have you seen the outfits Ralph Lauren designed for the USA Olympic Team? They are quite lovely. How nice for all the athletes to have such beautiful uniforms! However, part of me feels a little strange about having "my" team out there with big GIANT polo logos on the uniforms. Is there nothing we won't brand?
