nss 2011 meetup at brooklyn winery

Photos Kelly Guenther

How do I even begin to describe how amazing this event was?!?!! It was so fun to let some steam off with fellow Paper Peeps. Many thanks to everyone who helped organize my 7th Annual National Stationery Show (NSS) Meetup. Extra thanks to all the sponsors. And extra EXTRA thanks to everyone who trekked out to Brooklyn after a looong day at the Javits Center to party with us.

font geek moment: quanta

The studio looks like a hurricane blew through here. Multiple deadlines and last minute projects and juggling clients is wearing on me. I’m also getting ready for the NSS meetup in Brooklyn, but wanted to quickly post about the big sale on VEER. Everything is 25 percent off through June 10, 2011. As soon as things settle down I’m going to scoop up some new fonts, and QUANTA is on the list. What do you have your eye on?

color palette: moody luxe inspired by alexander mcQueen

In just a few days I’ll be in New York! Of course I’m looking forward to all the trade shows and seeing a ton of great designs (and designers); but I admit that I’m most looking forward to a visit to the Met with a dear friend to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit

7th annual nss meetup may 17, 2011

I am really looking forward to the National Stationery Show this year. I don’t have a booth, am not showing my line, but AM celebrating being part of this wonderful industry by co-hosting my 7th Annual NSS Meetup! It’s Tuesday, May 17 from 7 to 9:30 pm at Brooklyn Winery. All stationery industry peeps (designers, exhibitors, reps, buyers, store owners, bloggers, wedding planners, etc) are welcome. But KINDLY RESPOND because space is limited. RSVP required for admittance. The first 50 guests to arrive will get super awesome goodie bags (trust me, you’re going to want one of these).

This year Delphine has some special friends helping out with the hosting/planning: Brooklyn Bride, Cat Seto, Oh So Beautiful Paper, Paper + Cup , and The Sweetest Occasion.

Many big hugs and special thanks to the amazing sponsors of this year’s meetup. We truly could not have done it without Felt & Wire, The Knot, and Mohawk. And more thank you hugs to the goodie bag sponsors: Anthology Magazine, B-List, Blossom and Branch, Brooklyn Bride, Brooklyn Winery, Cat Seto, Delphine, Eat.Shop Guides, For Your Party, Graphic Image, Green Paper Company, Kelly Guenther StudioLinnea’s Lights, Mom Inc. Daily, Oh So Beautiful Paper, Paper + Cup, The Sweetest Occasion, and Wendelline Papers.

countdown to NSS: pack an umbrella

The National Stationery Show (NSS) is only 5 1/2 weeks away (GULP). I am SO HAPPY to not have to plan a booth this year. It’s a super stressful time suck. However, I still plan on going, for lots of reasons. I will be wearing many hats: designer, friend, buyer, licensor, licensee, blogger, writer, cheerleader, Stationery Show Meetup planner. What badge to wear?

For all you newbies, remember to pack an umbrella. It’s the best way to ensure good weather ; )

Here are four chic umbrellas, in various shades of my latest favorite color, yellow. No. 1: Burberry “Kensington” umbrella from Bloomies  No. 2: Marimekko Silkkikuikka umbrella from Umbrellas.net  No. 3: Clear bubble umbrella with yellow trim from Target  No. 4: Yellow & Gray travel umbrella from Jonathan Adler.

inspired by: American artist Charles Demuth

The Figure Five in Gold, by Charles Demuth (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)

It’s difficult to explain, so I won’t really try, but this painting is one of the reasons I became a graphic designer. It’s a portrait of William Carlos Williams (he wrote that sweet poem about plums, the icebox and forgiveness). Every time I go to New York I make a point of visiting this painting at the Met.

from the prop closet: travel souvenirs

Using souvenirs from my travels in photo shoots gives me a legitimate reason to save ephemera from my trips. The M button is from a visit to the Met in NYC last spring after the National Stationery Show.

Sachuest Point, by Kevin Gilmore

Last spring, after a loooong day at the National Stationery Show in New York City, I wandered into a wine shop in Brooklyn, in desperate need of a bottle of relaxation. Keep in mind that I had been at NSS and Surtex all week. If ever there is a place for eye candy overload, it’s at the Jacob Javits Center. Anyway, I wandered into Windsor Wine Merchants, walked past a smallish painting on the wall, then literally walked backwards and stood nose to glass, staring at this fabulous painting by Kevin Gilmore. This one foot square painting blew away everything I had seen at the trade shows all week. Just thinking of it still makes me happy.

You can visit some of Kevin Gilmore’s work (and Kevin himself, often) at Windsor Wine Merchants at 216 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn NY. Also he has a holiday show at Jessica Hagen Fine Art in Newport, RI this weekend. And you can also see some of his work at Muriel Guepin Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.

zine love: lonny magazine

Lonny magazine keeps getting better and better. I'm happy that online magazines are filling the gap in the shelter magazine space, and Lonny is my favorite of the bunch. One of the nicest things is that an online magazine isn't really limited by space in the magazine, so they can run longer stories with more pages of photos. Here are a few of my favorite stories from the August issue:

I was thrilled to see a profile on Virginia Tupker, a stylist and home market editor at Vogue. I've bumped into Virginia many times at many many trade shows. The first time I met her I was floored by her incredible sense of style. I remember telling my mom something like "she belongs in Vogue, she is so chic" and my mom (a French woman who knows a thing or two about being chic) told me something like "darling, she works there" and then told me to turn over the business card Virginia had handed me. Every time I see Virginia at The Javits Center (not the easiest place to keep your cool) she looks amazing. But what really stands out is that she is one of the most gracious editors I've ever dealt with. Thanks, Lonny, for offering me a peek inside Virginia's world.

The cheeky style of Ben Brougham's little NYC apartment makes me want to drop in for a cocktail. Something tells me he has frozen vodka at the ready. How cool is that rope pattern wallpaper? The color combo in these shots is one of my all time favorites. One of these days I'll get a client I can convince to go for this quirky color pairing.

My favorite photograph from the issue. Ben Brougham's apartment again.

Rachel Ashwell is back! While I think I'd get bored living with Shabby Chic style all the time (I love color too much to give it up), I still think her style is iconic and inspiring. I especially love how unpretentious her look is.

Have I ever told you what my dream job would be if I weren't a graphic designer? I'd be a magazine editor. When I was a journalism student my plan was to launch my own wedding magazine, so I guess I've always had a thing for the bridal market.

All images from Lonny Magazine August 2010 issue.

fantasy wedding at the four seasons

Last weekend I was hanging out by the pool, flipping through magazines, and fell in lust with Amsale's Eliana wedding gown. The ribbons are so pretty, aren't they? I started daydreaming about the type of wedding that would go with it, and I can totally see it as a winter wedding in New York City at The Four Seasons Restaurant. Silvers, wintery blues and black details. With lots of diamonds. And yummy food.

Gown: "Eliana" by Amsale; Invitation: letterpresss invitation Ava by Delphine; champagne flutes: Vera Wang for Wedgewood; china: Wedgewood Renaissance Gold

color palette: brooklyn flea

A visit to Brooklyn Flea last month inspired this color palette full of hipster-ish hues, including Rayblack, Brooklyn Yard, Schoolbus yellow and Hipster Red. I saw quite a few people in Brooklyn wearing vintage keys around their necks and think it will be a jewelry trend in the not so distant future here on the west coast, too.

Just a quick reminder ... if you'd like to subscribe to Delphine-Ephemera just click on the RSS button at the top of the right hand column : ) Thanks so much for your follow!

logo crush: blue marble ice cream

I have yet another logo crush. Don't you just love the simplicity of the Blue Marble Ice Cream logo? I think the bright blue color is awesome -- crisp and refreshing and totally different from all the pink and reds that are usually associated with ice cream brands. I spotted one of their ice cream carts at the Brooklyn Flea Market and had to sneak a shot of the scene.

color in new york city

Yesterday I was riding the subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan and noticed that I was the only person on the entire train wearing a colorful jacket (bright yellow, no less). But I was able to spot some color on the streets, which soothed my senses.

logo crush: ace hotel

Yes, this logo is prety simple. But that's why I love it so. I've already professed my admiration (see here) for the New York Ace Hotel, but forgot to post this photo I took of the door. So voila, another logo crush.
