Fellow North County graphic designer / photographer Myles McGuinness is looking for a new studio mate. The studio/gallery space is a couple blocks from the Oceanside Pier in the heart of downtown Oceanside, California. You could walk to the beach for your coffee break! UNDER CONSTRUCTION is a chance to share your latest work in progress. Please bring a printout of a project you’re working on, and we can swap stories about the projects & get some constructive criticism. 

Bekka Palmer will discuss INBOUND MARKETING FOR DESIGNERS: How a little sweat equity can bring well suited clients knocking at your door. Help yourself get found for what people are already looking for. Thousands of people are online looking for designers everyday, learn tactics to get yourself on their screens.

Bekka has been in the SEO & online marketing industry for three years. She specializes in technical SEO and content strategy. north county graphic design: design decline & movie night meetup thursday march 31, 2011

I do hope you’ll join us for our next North County Graphic Designer MOVIE NIGHT, which will also be our very first DESIGN DECLINE show. We’ll meet Thursday, March 31, 2011 / 6pm at Clients & Profits in Oceanside.

Here’s the scoop: print and bring a rejected logo (or other project) that was rejected by your client, but you secretly loved, along with the design the client eventually approved. (If the logo was a rebrand, bring the original if you’d like). In addition, write a brief blurb about the brand you were designing for (i.e. industry, audience, etc.) to put the design in context. The designs will be voted on and the winner will get a prize! 

FYI: no need for fancy formatting, mounting or anything crazy. We’ll just tack up copies on the whiteboard.

Oh, and we’ll also watch a short film about graphic designers and have a good chat.

behind the scenes: design is art show

I had a great time last night at the ART IS DESIGN? SHOW at Basic in San Diego. I was lucky to exhibit not in the gallery, but right next to Jennifer Price’s pop-up shop. It was tough to stare enviously at all her amazing furniture and vintage and found treasures last night and not spend my last dime.

Unfortunately I lost my voice early in the evening (it was crazy loud in there) so I didn’t get to chit chat or mingle as much as I had hoped. Many thanks to everyone who came out to support design last night!

design is art: show

This year I decided not to do any holiday trunk shows. I love them while I’m there mingling with shoppers and other vendors, but all the prep work is just too much this year with the rest of our workload.

HOWEVER I could not pass up the opportunity to exhibit my graphic design “work” as “art” at a fun show coming up tomorrow night at Basic in the East Village neighborhood of San Diego, CA. Graphic designer/artist Terri Mitchell (whom I met through my North County Graphic Designers group) invited me to participate, alongside a group of other local graphic designers. I can’t wait to see what everyone brings. I’ll bring some limited edition letterpress prints, cards, totes and other goodies. It will be fun to see where the line between ART and WORK blurs.

My friend Jennifer Price from SoLo will also be there with a Pop Up shop. If you like vintage industrial repurposed cool stuff you do not want to miss seeing Jen’s work!
