7th annual nss meetup may 17, 2011

I am really looking forward to the National Stationery Show this year. I don’t have a booth, am not showing my line, but AM celebrating being part of this wonderful industry by co-hosting my 7th Annual NSS Meetup! It’s Tuesday, May 17 from 7 to 9:30 pm at Brooklyn Winery. All stationery industry peeps (designers, exhibitors, reps, buyers, store owners, bloggers, wedding planners, etc) are welcome. But KINDLY RESPOND because space is limited. RSVP required for admittance. The first 50 guests to arrive will get super awesome goodie bags (trust me, you’re going to want one of these).

This year Delphine has some special friends helping out with the hosting/planning: Brooklyn Bride, Cat Seto, Oh So Beautiful Paper, Paper + Cup , and The Sweetest Occasion.

Many big hugs and special thanks to the amazing sponsors of this year’s meetup. We truly could not have done it without Felt & Wire, The Knot, and Mohawk. And more thank you hugs to the goodie bag sponsors: Anthology Magazine, B-List, Blossom and Branch, Brooklyn Bride, Brooklyn Winery, Cat Seto, Delphine, Eat.Shop Guides, For Your Party, Graphic Image, Green Paper Company, Kelly Guenther StudioLinnea’s Lights, Mom Inc. Daily, Oh So Beautiful Paper, Paper + Cup, The Sweetest Occasion, and Wendelline Papers.

national stationery show meetup 2011

I’m coming out of hibernation (deadlines, deadlines, deadlines are killing me!) to let you know that the 7th annual National Stationery Show (NSS) meetup is happening Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 in New York, so please save the date. This year I’m organizing the meetup with Brooklyn Bride, Cat Seto, and Paper + Cup. I’m so looking forward to catching up with everyone in New York for Design Week 2011! Details will follow soon … we’re still trying to find the most perfect location.

geek chic for 2011 design & blog conferences

Normally at this time of year I’d be starting to freak out about trade shows. Atlanta just passed, NYIGF is going on right about now, and the National Stationery Show is coming up in just a few months. In years past, I’d be a hot mess right now, trying to finish up collections, make travel arrangements, scrape together pennies, design my booth, and schedule meetings on the other side of the country, all the while juggling running my business, design projects, and family life.

This year I’ve decided to take time off from the shows. That’s right: Delphine will not be exhibiting this year. A lot of factors went into this decision, but the major one was my sanity. I was a little worried that I would feel left out as the tweets started pouring in from Atlanta and NYIGF, but instead I just feel relief. I really can honestly say that I don’t miss the shows at all. I do miss seeing my friends, but the shows themselves: nope.

Not doing the shows left me with time to fill my calender with some of the things I’ve always wanted to do: like enjoy lectures and design conferences. This year quite a few are right here in San Diego (BlogHer, Engage11, and my favorite conference: the Y Conference). I haven’t decided if I’ll go to all three yet, but for sure I’ll be at two of them.

In preparation for the Y Conference, I am hoping to splurge on a few things I’ve been needing wanting for a while now: 1} a brand new field note book from russell+hazel, and 2} a bright yellow Caran D’ache pen to record all the genius things I learn at the lectures. Nobody will want to be near me if I’m not properly caffeinated, so 3} a new yellow travel mug for coffee (Crate and Barrel) is in order. I swear we used to have a dozen travel mugs and they’ve all managed to disappear. Does that happen at your house? Where do all the travel mugs go?  It has been a few years since I got a new pair of glasses, and I’m totally in love with everything about 4} these Warby Parker frames.

It can get chilly in lecture halls, so a bright yet cozy scarf like 5} this lightweight yellow and white scarf from J. Crew would be lovely to have stashed in 7} a chic and understated waxed canvas tote bag (also from J. Crew). John, I can hear you … and the answer is no, it is NOT POSSIBLE to have too many tote bags. Besides, I don’t have anything as cool as this one. For real.  When attending design conference, there are almost always swag stations sponsor rooms. For these, it is imperitive to have a supply of up to date business cards. Plus, it’s always nice to be able to hand a new friend a fresh card from a 8} swanky metallic leather business card holder, not a beat up one from the bottom of your tote bag that’s covered in gum, pen marks or cracker crumbs. It goes without saying that 9} new shoes—stylish but comfy ones by Tom’s—would be super nice to have, too.

A friend has convinced me to join the Greeting Card Association. I was on the fence about it, until I realized that the annual conference will be in 6} Austin this year. My two best friends in the whole world live there, (surpise R + D! I’m coming to visit this summer at long last).

graphic art: eleanor

How cute are these birdie mugs by Eleanor? I had the great pleasure of meeting her last month at the National Stationery Show, and was totally blown away by her cute booth and her gorgeous illustrations. Of course I forgot my camera the day I walked the show, so I have no pictures. Bummer! But check out Eleanor's work on her Push Me Pull You site. She's going to be speaking at the HOW conference this weekend and I so wish I could be there.

color in new york city

Yesterday I was riding the subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan and noticed that I was the only person on the entire train wearing a colorful jacket (bright yellow, no less). But I was able to spot some color on the streets, which soothed my senses.

i heart design week

I'm en route to the Big Apple as I write this (gotta love WiFi on Virgin America! Yay!) for Design Week. Of course the National Stationery Show is most near and dear to my heart, but I'm also looking forward to visiting all the amazing artists at Surtex and ICFF. Stay tuned for news from the Javits Center.

wish list: pill keychain

On my wish list: Jonathan Adler's new enamel heart pill storage keychain. I am constantly shoving my Excedrin Migraine meds in my pocket (gross).

BYW, at NYIGF last week John nearly ran over poor Jonathan Adler in the aisle. Sorry, Jonathan!

wish list: urban totes

I spotted Property Of at NYIGF last week and fell in love with their bags. I could tell that a designer was having a blast with this line -- everything from the booth design to the hang tags to the business cards ... to the bags themselves are executed flawlessly. There are not too many cool guy's bag lines out there. After nearly a year long search John finally settled on a rather ugly and uninspired bag from Target for his computer bag. Had we known about these awesome bags I think he'd be much happier toting his gear around! The two I've shown here are made of waxcloth. Love them. I think they'd make cool diaper bags, too. Check out the Property Of site (well designed, easy to navigate, full of cool stuff... yahoo!) to see the rest of their range of bags.

i heart new york

I had a wonderful time in New York last week at NYIGF. One of the highlights was hanging out in the lobby of the ACE Hotel, sipping St. Germaine & sodas with an old friend whom I had met on the gift show circuit several years ago. In this economy, when so many people are either out of work or stuck in jobs they hate, I feel SO SO SO lucky to be doing something I love for a living, and to be surrounded by so many other "creatives." It was wonderful to catch up with my friend, who is also doing something uber creative (she helps design the window displays at Anthro. Swoon).

Next time you're in New York do yourself a favor and check out the ACE Hotel. I don't really want to spoil it, so I won't go into much detail here, but it was cool, artsy and unpretentious.  Not an easy combo to pull off.

mimosas

I have an exciting announcement to make next week. It involves mimosas, New York, and, best of all: friends.
